At Smooth Moves Ranch, we love the excitement of foaling season, not just because of the new life it brings, but also because of the mystery each foalās color holds. The genetics of coat color can feel like rolling the dice, but with a little science, we can make some pretty good predictions.
Today, letās take a look at the pairing of Infinito de DoƱa Lola, our bay stallion, and Isadora AA, our chestnut mare.
š“ Parent Colors and Genetics
Isadora AA ā Chestnut (ee)
Chestnut horses are always ee, which means they can only pass along the recessive āeā gene. No matter who she is paired with, she will always contribute an āe.ā
Infinito de DoƱa Lola ā Bay (Ee)
Bay horses carry at least one āEā (black pigment) plus the agouti gene āAā (which restricts black to the points, leaving a brown coat). What makes Infinito interesting is that he also carries a hidden āe,ā the chestnut gene.
š How We Know Infinito is Ee
At first glance, you might think Infinito could be EE (only able to pass black) or Ee (able to pass black or chestnut). The difference is subtle but important.
Hereās how we solved the puzzle:
Infinito and DinastĆa IA (a bay mare) produced two bay foals and one chestnut foal.
A chestnut foal is only possible if both parents pass down the recessive āe.ā
That means DinastĆa IA is Ee, and Infinito must also be Ee.
Without that hidden chestnut gene, chestnut foals could never appear in his offspring.
š² Foal Color Percentages with Isadora
Now that we know Infinito is Ee and Isadora is ee, the genetics are straightforward:
50% Bay foals (Ee)
50% Chestnut foals (ee)
No matter how many times these two are paired, each foal is like flipping a coin: half the time bay, half the time chestnut.
š The Fun of Foal Colors
Every foal is special, no matter the color, but part of the joy at SMR is the anticipation. With Infinito Ć Isadora, we know weāll either see the elegance of a bay or the fiery glow of a chestnut. Either way, the foal will carry forward the proud Paso Fino heritage that runs deep in both bloodlines.
So next time you see us on foal watch, remember, color genetics may be science, but the reveal is always a little bit magic. āØ
