Winning the Battle

One of the greatest spiritual battles you will face is self-control, and yet it is one that every Christian must win. The Bible lists self-control as one of the fruits of the spirit in Galatians 5:22-23: “By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things.” It’s easy to get along with people who are nice to you, but the minute they step on a nerve, you have a decision to make. You can choose to stay calm and respond in a Christlike way or you can get angry and verbally defend your point of view. If you choose to react by throwing fiery verbal darts, at the moment those words leave your mouth, you officially surrender your power to the very one who attacked you, thus allowing them to control your emotions. The Bible says in Proverbs 25:28, “Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self control.” It takes strength from God to achieve “self-control,” and you gain the victory by claiming Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Don’t allow your emotions to be controlled by others. Strive to reach the point where your mood doesn’t shift based on the insignificant actions of someone else. First Peter 4:7 tells us, “The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.” When the devil tries to push your buttons, remain calm and of sober mind, and let God fight your battles!
